Heat Exchanger Transport: What You Need to Know
Last Modified: August 25, 2023
Learn how Heavy Haul and Oversized can be the heavy transport provider you can count on for heat exchanger transport when you need it.

Heat exchanger transport requires a lot of work and preparation, especially when it involves shipping to construction sites that count on carefully planned phases. To get your products and heavy and over dimensional equipment delivered on time, you have to count on an oversized construction transport company you can trust.

Heat exchanger transportation requires the use of a flatbed carrier equipped to transport heavy haul loads. A heat exchanger can weigh nearly 200 tons and exceed standard flatbed shipping dimensions. Ensuring you partner with a transportation company you can trust is critical.

What is a Heat Exchanger?

A heat exchanger is a device that is constructed to transfer heat between two liquids, which are in contact or separated by a solid barrier. Heat exchangers are critical components in many types of electrical equipment, including:

  • Air conditioning
  • Chemical processors
  • Refrigeration systems

Where are Heat Exchangers Shipped?

Heat exchangers are used all over the country and across the globe. They are used in a variety of fields, including:

  • Factories
  • Production plants
  • Marine and boat production plants
  • Swimming pool construction (to move water from boilers to the pool)

What are Common Heat Exchanger Heavy Haul Transport Items?

Heat exchangers are used in so many types of construction and are a critical transport item for the following:

  • Fluid Heat Exchangers
  • Tantalum Heat Exchanger
  • Plate Fin Heat Exchanger
  • Pillow Plate Heat Exchanger
  • Waste Heat Recovery Units
  • Direct Contact Heat Exchangers
  • Dynamic Scraped Surface Heat Exchanger
  • Kelley Condenser with Pump Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger
  • Krauss Maffei Rotary Tray Dryer
  • Plate Heat Exchangers
  • Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers
  • Dual Chamber Scrape Surface Heat Exchanger
  • Adiabatic Wheel Heat Exchanger
  • Plate and Shell Heat Exchanger
  • Continuous Double Cylinder Scrape Surface Heat Exchanger
  • Hair Pin Style Heat Exchanger for Pasteurization, Cooling and Heating
  • Phase-Change Heat Exchangers
  • Vertical Scrape Surface Heat Exchangers
  • Diameter Screw Auger Votator Scraped Heat Exchanger
  • Heat Exchanger for Cooling, Dehumidifying and Heating

What Are the Types of Heat Exchangers?

There are many different types of heat exchangers that include:

  • Counter-flow
  • Parallel flow
  • Finned tubular heat
  • Unfinned tubular heat
  • U-tube (single pass straight and two pass straight)
  • Plate-fin heat
  • Microchannel heat
  • Plate and frame heat

How Many Types of Heat Exchangers are There?

The two main types of heat exchangers are static heat exchangers and dynamic heat exchangers.

In static heat exchangers, the heat exchanger material is stationary as liquids flow through the device, while in dynamic heat exchangers, the material and components move through the heat transfer process. Both types are at risk of cross-contamination between fluid streams, necessitating careful design considerations during manufacturing.

Static Heat Exchanger Example

In one example of the static type, warmer fluid is run through one channel while cooler fluid runs through another for a fixed period of time at the end of which, through the use of quick-operating valves, flow is reversed such that the two fluids switch channels.

Dynamic Heat Exchanger Example

An example of the dynamic heat exchanger involves a spinning, thermally conductive component drum through which both warm and cool fluids keep moving in individual, sealed-off sections. As the component turns, any given section goes through the warmer steam and cooler streams, allowing for the component to retain heat from the warm liquid and transfer the heat to the cooler liquid as it passes through.
